[email] [print]  Cooking Up Java

Jun 02, 2005 23:09 UTC, by Chris Simmons, Senior Journalist.
From the who-let-the-dogs-loose? department...

Bryan Varner expounds on his reaction to Andy Roberts original article titled "The Java Performance debate", posted at OSNews.

As both a developer and long-time writer I found both the original article and Bryans' response enlightening, to say the least. This is meaty stuff, meant to be digested slowly while pondering the ramifications of what it will mean to have Java on Haiku. While we may not have the main course set before our plate, we smell it cooking in the kitchen, as we sit at the developer table with kindred souls doing the same, in communal expectation. Call it clichè, call it me being a silly disillusioned dreamer with a penchant for the fantastical, but I feel a certain wild trepidation of the likes I haven't felt since I first glimpsed the first of many BeOS screenshots so long ago.

Like a floodgate opened fully, I predict we will see thousands of fresh, eager developers come to Haiku willing to try it out once it's ready. In turn there will be ten, twenty, fifty viable projects for the Haiku platform, both fresh and old, created by these enthusiastic developers who want to see what coding on a clean platform can accomplish.

That's how I see it. I've sat by in the sidelines for most of this year as I struggled with finding work, eeking out a living, and generally remaining quiet. One thing has greatly impressed onto me what the future will bring, and that is the enthusiasm, dedication and sheer will inherit in the many developers we have around us.

Here's a toast gang. You deserve it.

Now lets' eat.
