We wish to hold the whole sky,

[email] [print]  Open Sound System 4.0 is coming to Haiku

Jul 04, 2007 17:56 UTC, by Remi Grumeau, Contributing Journalist.
From the department...

Francois Revol (aka Mmu_man) has annonced, on both Haiku Mailing list and Haiku channel, working on the port of OpenSound System to Haiku.
For thoses who have no idea what this OSS can be, it's no way related to submarines ! :) Here is a quote of its initial developper website:

"Open Sound System (OSS) is the first attempt in unifying the digital audio architecture for UNIX. OSS is a set of device drivers that provide a uniform API across all the major UNIX architectures.
It supports Sound Blaster or Windows Sound System compatible sound cards which can be plugged into any UNIX workstation supporting the ISA or PCI bus architecture. OSS also supports workstations with on-board digital audio hardware.
"

Notice that the Haiku OSS drivers will just work like any other of the currently available audio drivers, using the Media-kit.
Francois has already tested his drivers with success using SIS and ATI chipsets.
