From the standards department...

Just got word from Simon Gauvin. BeFree has joined beunited.org and is now part of the OSBOS group.

beunited had been in talks with BeFree's leader Pier Luigi Fiorini and the talks have come to a end, with the already mentioned end. Here's what beunited had to say about it:

"After several days of talks with Pier Luigi Fiorini, leader of the BeFree project, BeFree has joined beunited.org as a standards compliant OSBOS project. 'This is a very interesting project unlike any other OSBOS' said Simon Gauvin, president of beunited.org, 'and it shows the innovation and dedication of developers who want to bring BeOS to different platforms using a standard approach.'

The BeFree project will be participating in the development of standards and as well making proposals for changes to the BeAPI. As Pier states, 'Some of the BeAPI is showing it's age, and as a community we should work together to bring it up-to-date.'

The BeFree project has the goal of bringing the BeOS API using FreeBSD and removing all X server requirements. Using only the FreeBSD kernel and porting the kits from BeOS, using ports already in progress from other OSBOS projects, BeFree hopes to have a working OSBOS that is "As powerful as BeOS, as stable as 'NIX.'"

So there you have it, another project join the beunited effort to bring standards into the BeOS world.
