[email] [print]  beunited.org Updates Java to 1.4.2.

From the shapely-widgets department...

beunited.org has news that Java has been updated to version 1.4.2 in command line form. I'll let them explain it more fully:

"The beunited.org Java team that is porting Sun's Java to OSBOS is pleased to announce that it has now a complete command line version of 1.4.2 running. This version is an upgrade from 1.4.0 and includes the java (virtual machine) and javac (java compiler) commands. Also included are javah, jar and many others. This version of Java also provides improvements in stability, speed, and threading. This virtual machine uses native BeOS threads and signals making it a very fast thread-aware VM.

Work continues on the development of the J2SE libraries that will be compatible with all OSBOS implementations, including the current R5.0.3 version of BeOS. AWT libraries are being ported as well as networking and Swing look and feel that has a BeOS look. This will mean that applications in Java will look and feel like native BeOS applications. Sun testing of the full J2SE for distribution is planned for early next year."

I sent Simon a short email asking for more information. I'll let you know here if/when he responds.

** update (20-oct-2003) **

Simon replied to my email, and here's part of what he told me:
"As for the schedule, that's all in the air since we don't have Sun's tests yet. We should be done by the end of this year though, at least with a first complete implementation of J2SE now that we have the VM working. AWT and Swing should not be too hard to pull off either."

It's nice to see so much progress from the dedicated group of developers, but I don't want people to get the wrong idea here. Let's just see what comes down the road, and TBJ will report it when it happens.
