[email] [print]  Interview With Bruno G. Albuquerque About openBFS.

Dec 20, 2002 14:39 UTC, by Chris Simmons, Senior Journalist.
From the scary-basement department...

We actually concluded this interview quite some time ago, but with Real Life™ being what it is, I am now just posting this for your reading pleasure. ;-)
It's short, and to the point, focusing on the development of openBFS...

The latest verson of openBFS is now beta 5. How confident are you of it's stability and usability in everyday computing life?

Well, it is still a beta product. I say that if you know how to recover from a possible crash that would make your system unbootable, then go for it. :) I had one of those today but having a spare BeOS was enough to get my system back to life with no data lost. :)

If someone has more BFS partitions, and would like to test your bfs driver but only on one particular partition, how can they do so?

They will have to compile it from sources. There is a special flag set during compile time that makes it a full BFS replacement. I used that on the package I made available so it is not a good idea to just put it in ~/config/add-ons/kernel/file_system as it will clash with the original bfs.

You said your driver is faster than then original one, and smaller. Does it mean you didn't implement some features of the original, or are you just better coders? ;]
I wouldn't say better coders. The point is that we had more time to do stuff than Dominic did. Also, we were able to use his design which was really a boost to the project. His book is awesome.

If no new bugs are discovered, when can we see release 1.0?
I would say 2 weeks, but I already found some bugs. (Mostly in the query stuff.)

What do you plan next for the openBFS driver after release 1.0? Will you add some new features and enhancements as requested by users?
We will look into creating a different FS based on BFS' concepts but not with the goal of being compatible with the on-disk structures. This way we think we can make BFS2 even better. :)

What is your next project after openBFS? What part of openBeOS would you like to help with?
Axel will focus on the kernel, as he is the Kernel Team Lead. I guess I will focus on Networking and try to understand the Media Kit. We will see.

Thanks for your time today, Bruno. We all look forward to your continued involvement with openBeOS, in some form or another.

My pleasure.

You can find out more about what's been going on these days with the entire openBeOS movement, by heading to the official openBeOS website, or following the news on The BeOSJournal, or even listening to BeOS Radio. There's always something going on, so keep a smile on your face, and greet the new day with the knowledge that BeOS may be dead, but it's heir(s) are gathering strength daily. ;)
