[email] [print]  BFS for Linux Updated.

Oct 25, 2001 12:00 UTC, by Chris Simmons, Senior Journalist.
From the squashed department...

The much experiemental BFS driver for Linux has been updated. Here is what the author had to say on BeDevTalk:

"I have got a new version of the BFS filesystem driver for linux. It is *much* more robust than the last time I posted here about it. It now reliably reads every file and directory on both of my BFS volumes. I have been using it to play my mp3s with no problems.

There is a little webpage about it here:

http://befs-driver.sourceforge.net/ (link updated Feb 22, 2004)

I have only tested it on 2.4.9 at the moment. Now that it works reliably (for me), I will see about catching up to more recent kernels.

If you held off trying it last time because of the known bugs, now might be a good time to try it. It is not (yet) perfect, but I hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

And remember, every test report I get back is worth its weight in gold (even if it is just "It works here"). I would like to have some confidence that it works on other peoples systems before I announce it to sites like OS News.

File truncation bug: Squashed
Partial directory bug: Squashed
Directory it thinks is a file: (almost certainly) Squashed (Stephan?)

Many thanks to Vegard Waerp for help with testing along the way."

We at The BeOS Journal want to stress, just like Will points out, that we are not responsible for serious damage, system crashes, or falling meteors due to usage of this software. ;) At this point, it appears that Will is looking for feedback and support before making the big announcement, so, please show him some courtesy and respect when you provide that feedback. It is great news, all around, we think, but it is probrably best to take it one step at a time.
