[email] [print]  Belated Haiku Progress Report.

Nov 20, 2004 18:10 UTC, by Chris Simmons, Senior Journalist.
From the just-mustard department...

We're going to be filling our archive with some of the recent Haiku related events we missed reporting on in our absence, so please forgive us if you've heard these newsbits before.

  • Nathan Whitehorn made a screenshot showing off just how far Haiku has come at replacing libraries and various components of the BeOS R5. As you will see, the only servers remaining are: audio_server, debug_server, registrar, syslog_daemon and app_server. We know progress may appear slow with regards to the app_server development, but it is one of the most heavily used and complicated kits to finish, so it will take some time. Note also the increased number of replacement libraries. Astounding!
  • The Haiku input_server is now mostly functional, thanks to the hard work of Stefano Ceccherini. Not only can it be compiled and dropped in place of the regular input_server, but Stefano indicated in his report that he is in the process of completing the PS/2 and AT keyboard drivers, marking the new input_server as nearly finished. A word of warning to those that want to live dangerous; have your BeOS R5 disc handy in case the new input_server requires you to revert back to the old one. Questions and comments can be directed at one of the many mailing lists.
  • The Haiku kernel kit has achieved some milestones, as demonstrated at the recent BeGeistert 013. Notably, progress includes a working implementation of fork(), exec(), waitpid() and a TTY layer. A fully functional BASH runs on the new kernel, including a litany of shell commands. Axel reported that he was able to boot from a hard drive into a graphical console, on real hardware, for the first time, thus marking closure for a (forgotten?) bounty of $1000 Australian dollars.

The Haiku project remains steadfast in their development; kudos to all active developers.

(Update: 22-nov-2004)
Appears I recalled the bounty aspect incorrectly. As pointed out in our forum, the bounty was originally for getting OpenTracker working on Haiku. Apologies for the error. :)
