Bryan Varner hasn't had
much sleep lately, and we now know
the real reason.
It's significant progess with Java, getting it working on BeOS, and more specifically, the large amount of bug fixing for the many AWT components, window graphics drawing routines, and more.
Bryan posted about his sleepless nites last weekend on
his blog. Here's a couple of choice snippets. :)
Spent seven hours tracking down one bug / trying to get something new to work. I tried to go to sleep last night, but kept thinking about it. After laying in bed for an hour I had it. I got up, I fixed it. I went back to sleep… it was 2:30 by that time.
So this morning I got up and kept working on things… I still am. As a side effect of fixing the bug last night, graphics got even smoother (yet again). This time, I decided to break out the DV camera to record a bit. I’ve got an LCD display, so thankfully I can record without flicker. Remember that capture a few weeks ago of Wireframe demo 2? That BeScreenCapture movie was pretty accurate in how slow (fast) things were moving at that time.
He recorded a small demo of Wireframing in action, but for the likes of me (and a poster in his blogs comments section.) I was unable to play the avi video properly, despite using the latest
VLC which as far as I knew, played
anything.
Behold: WireFrame example 2 as of this morning (~3.5 MB divx) This is less screen-flicker than occurs for me when I run this under Windows 2000.
I had hoped to have more to report at this point, but I’m still working on it. I’m mostly in a bug-fixing mode right now. I want it to be more stable before I move on much further. There’s still some pretty nasty bugs, and many of the AWT components don’t seem to behave quite properly. I think Andrew has some event changes that he needs to commit… although I’m not sure.
Thanks to eagle-eyed Datatec for the heads up, and letting us know what Bryan is up to these days. Good work Bryan! Now perhaps, make a new video? Pleaaase? :)
