[email] [print]  RISC OS Developer Ports Haiku Driver

Jul 07, 2005 14:57 UTC, by Chris Simmons, Senior Journalist.
From the seeing-vectors department...

Some interesting reverse news. It seems RISC OS developers like BeOS drivers. :D

Over at RISC OS News (Drobe Launchpad), they're reporting one of their prominent developers, one Simon Wilson (author of PCITV) has ported a BeOS nvidia driver to the RISC OS platform.

As far as I'm aware this is the first time a developer from another alternative OS has used a BeOS/Haiku driver, so that's quite cool. Is this just a non-event? Or the start of something more? As Haiku gains popularity, development status, and lines of code, and contributions will we start to see a reversing trend take place?

Just imagine if you will a few years from now, a headline that states, "Building Linux From Haiku: Step-by-Step Guide". Yes, I know, perhaps unrealistic but you get my meaning. :D

I've sent a couple of email queries to Simon, asking him specifically which nvidia driver he used, etc. More information here when I get it.

**update 16:49 **
I got a reply from Simon:

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your email. I ported version 0.43 of the 2D nVidia accelerant, and version alpha 1f of the 3D accelerant, with Mesa 3.2. I was intending to get in touch once I have ironed out the remaining issues with the port. I first attempted to port the DMA version of the 3D accelerant (alpha 2f) and the corresponding 2D driver, but it appears to interfere with the 2D driver resident in the operating system, for which I have no source.

Now alpha 1f is running, I can go from there.

I will certainly share any improvements I make to the code back to the BeOS community.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Best wishes,

Simon

We're exchanging some email and I've sent him a couple of questions about his work, etc, for a short interview I'll post later. Stay tuned.
